Our son called us on the evening of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. When he asked his dad to put him on speaker phone, I knew in my gut that this wasn’t going to be good news. He told us that he was having trouble breathing due to some fluid build-up in his chest. Even though he was upbeat, I knew, as only a mother does, that this was going to be very, very bad.
