Twelve years later

That was twelve years ago. At the time, we treated it like pneumonia or some other virus. Our attitude was “control, eliminate and move on.” We didn’t pause to consider any alternative other than that he would come through this temporary detour and go back to his and our normal life. We rarely talked about our feelings. We didn’t discuss how we were dealing with the elephant in the living room, we just walked around and around it. Now, 12 years later, the elephant is back, bigger than before.
